After Buchs station, we come back to the Werdenberger Binnenkanal, which we follow for a longer stretch. In the hay meadow, a beautiful picnic spot invites us to rest.
Grabs Gallus Center
Up to Trübbach, the railway line shows us the way, and then we continue along the old Schollbergstrasse. This restored 500-year-old path leads through the Sargans fortress area. Together with the fortresses of Gotthard and St. Maurice, this forms the core of the Swiss redoubt in World War II. We pass numerous decommissioned bunkers and firing slits that were built during WWII for border protection.
Afterwards, it is only a short walk to Sargans with its impressive castle.

Today we hike through Grabs (Gallus stayed here after his break with Columban), Werdenberg, the smallest town in Switzerland, and then to Sargans, the crossroads of the Rhine Valley and the Seez Valley.

After about 500m on the country road towards Gams, we leave it and take the hiking trail along the Werdenberger Binnenkanal. Following the hiking signposts, we arrive at Grabs.
Shortly after, at the Protestant church, we cross the busy road and hike towards Buchs. We climb up to Werdenberg Castle. With around 60 inhabitants, Werdenberg is one of the smallest towns in Switzerland. The tightly interlocked medieval houses are very well preserved and worth a short stay, as well as a visit to the museum in the castle. Every two years, an open-air opera performance takes place at Lake Werdenberg.
Our path now leads from the castle down to the lake and through the town of Buchs towards the train station. After passing under the railway tracks, we follow the hiking trail, which will lead us for the next approximately 6 km once again along the Werdenberger Binnenkanal. The yellow hiking sign at the bridge points left and shortly after right into a bright forest. On a beautiful forest path, we enjoy about 1 km of peace and bird singing before we walk past a farm and head into open terrain towards the hay meadow with a beautiful picnic spot with fire pits.
Next, we continue until the railway line, then along it further south to Trübbach station. Here we go under the railway tracks again, turn left onto the main road and follow it about 100m to the former Löwen restaurant, where we cross the road and enter Wolfgartenstrasse. 500m later
The still operating quarry is bypassed by a new tunnel and an attractive footbridge. On the way, we also notice some wheel marks from the era of horse-drawn carriages. Then we hike slightly downhill to Sargans (up to the castle) and then down into the town, today's stage destination.
Sargans is located at a crossroads: coming from Chur, one branch follows the Seez towards Walensee and Zurich, while the other branch follows the Rhine north to Lake Constance.
From the 1st to 3rd century, there was a Roman estate in Sargans, whose foundations are still visible and conserved in a glass building. Ore was mined in Sargans from that time until 1966. From 1100 onwards, the prominently visible castle was built.
