This stage takes us along the paths of the 3 original cantons that founded the Swiss Confederation in August 1291. We walk the longest part of the route in Unterwalden, now called Nidwalden, up to Volligen just before Treib. Then we hike nearly one kilometer in the canton of Uri to the ship dock, and when we leave the ship after a 10-minute crossing at the stage location Brunnen, we already enter the canton of Schwyz.

This stage is challenging but rewards us with unique views of the different arms of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps. The steep shores in the last part of the stage force us upwards, through steep ascents and descents. The path is also called the "Waldstättenweg" or "Nidwaldenweg." The ascent from Rütenen to Schöneck before Emmetten is strenuous, and the descent behind Emmetten to Treib is also steep, requires good footwear, and is only recommended for experienced and sure-footed hikers, especially in rainy weather. However, there are alternate routes both for the ascent and descent, and finally, from Beckenried to Brunnen there is also a scheduled boat.

However, by taking it you also miss parts of the magnificent views of Lake Lucerne, Brunnen, Schwyz, and the two Mythen, thus part of the next stage.

Note(s)

The "Jerusalemweg / JERUSALEM WAY" is a pilgrim trail network that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 3 most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This trail starts at Cape Finisterra on the west coast of Europe and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans into Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
