Einsiedeln - Rapperswil

We leave Einsiedeln past the monastery and meet the «Galgenchappeli» at the edge of the town, a chapel whose history is obviously linked to a former gallows site there. At the sloping end of the plateau we cross the Sihl over the «Tüfelsbrugg», which flows from the reservoir towards Zurich. Before the path then leads down to Lake Zurich, we encounter the St. Meinrad Chapel at the Etzel Pass. From here we can say goodbye to the mountain ranges of Central Switzerland as well as to the two Mythen mountains, which we had in view from the south the day before.

The Etzel road, dating from the 10th century, then initially descends steeply through a forest towards Lake Zurich. When we leave the forest, a magnificent view opens up over Lake Zurich, Seedamm, and Obersee. To get to the stage destination Rapperswil, we will cross Lake Zurich on the Seedamm, but we do not have to follow the busy road, as there is a path away from the road for pilgrims, pedestrians, or cyclists, which even finally leads us to the other shore on a wooden footbridge.

The «Jerusalemweg / JERUSALEM WAY» is a pilgrimage network that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the three most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This route begins at Cape Finisterre on the west coast of Europe and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans to Turkey, and from there on a common route back to Jerusalem.
