Confluence of Aare and Rhine at Koblenz
We now arrive in the so-called water castle of Switzerland. Here the rivers Aare, Limmat and Reuss unite to form the Aare, which then flows into the Rhine at Koblenz. The catchment area of these rivers covers around 40% of the Swiss territory.

Baden. Around 14 AD the Romans built the legion camp Vindonissa near Baden. Because of the healing effects of the thermal waters, they built thermal baths on the Limmat. Baden was located at the intersection of important transport routes: from Augusta Raurica (Augst) via Vindonissa (Windisch) to Vitudurum (Winterthur) and Brigantium (Bregenz), as well as in the direction of Turicum (Zurich) and from there to the Alpine passes.

From Baden, a short trip to Windisch (Vindonissa) is worthwhile, where remains of the Roman settlement can be seen and an interesting interactive museum takes you back to the time around the first millennium.
In Koblenz we leave the Rhine and the Via Rhenana and now follow the course of the Aare. A few steps before entering the slightly curved railway bridge, we turn right onto a narrow path leading us to the bank of the Aare. There we turn left, against the flow of the river, and shortly afterwards pass the dam with the power plant of the Klingnauer Reservoir. We follow this reservoir to its end at Döttingen.
Afterwards we walk again along the Aare to Untersiggenthal. The area was already settled during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The first documented mention dates from the year 833. Property owners in the 9th century were the Fridolin monastery in Säckingen, in the 11th century the Einsiedeln monastery, in the 12th century the St. Blasien monastery, from 1245 the Wettingen monastery and from 1337 the Königsfelden monastery in Windisch. Windisch was owned by the Habsburgs, whose ancestral seat was slightly west of Windisch.
From Untersiggenthal the path continues along the right bank of the Limmat to Baden. The stage town Baden is a spa town.
In 1714 one of the numerous peace treaties—the Peace of Baden—was concluded here to end the Spanish War of Succession.
As the founding place of Brown, Boveri, today ABB, Baden is an internationally important center of the electrical engineering industry.
