Iseltwald - Brienz
The Iseltwald - Giessbach riverside path is closed during the winter months due to the risk of falling rocks. Reason: Stone chipping
Info

Between Interlaken and Brienz, there is a pilgrim path on both the north and south shores. The alternative on the south shore was developed because in winter the path on the north shore is occasionally closed, which is less often the case on the south shore path. For this reason, we chose the Jerusalem Way along the south shore. Another reason is that this popular hiking trail also passes directly by the impressive Giessbach Falls. If both paths are closed, there are still the scheduled ships.

In Interlaken, we cross the Aare, which flows from Lake Brienz to Lake Thun. We are here in the middle of the Bernese Alps; for example, on the right side lies the famous alpine summit trio Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau,

Upon reaching Lake Brienz, we turn northwards and then follow a lonely hiking trail via Bönigen and Iseltwald mostly directly along the lakeshore. Shortly before the Giessbach Falls, we leave the shore and climb steeply up to the waterfalls and the eponymous hotel, which is accessible from Brienz via a feeder road. Via Engi, it then goes back down to the lake and across the new and then the original Aare mouth to the stage location Brienz, which is known, among other things, for its woodcarving tradition.

Note(s)

The "Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY" is a network of pilgrim paths that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 3 most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This path starts at Cape Finisterra on Europe's west coast and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans to Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
