The cathedral and the Herz-Jesu Church are still in the fog

Today's stage in Schleswig-Holstein takes us away from Lübeck on the Baltic Sea in a southwesterly direction towards Hamburg, and Hamburg lies in the estuary area of the Elbe, which flows into the North Sea. So we cross a peninsula that stretches far to the north, separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea. The southern part of this peninsula still belongs to Germany (Schleswig-Holstein), while the northern part belongs to Denmark (Jutland). As we can see from the elevation profile, however, this peninsula does not have the character of a mountain range but is quite flat. This is also the reason why Lübeck can have a navigable canal connection southwards to the Elbe.

Today's route largely follows the Trave. In Moisling, we have an opportunity to visit the largest Jewish cemetery in Schleswig-Holstein behind a brick wall. We will walk most of the route south of the Trave, but between Klein Wesenberg and Gross Wesenberg we switch to the northern side. Our stage ends in Reinfeld at the Matthias-Claudius Church on the hill.

Note(s)

The pilgrimage route along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea has various names, in Germany for example also "Baltic-Westphalian Way of St. James". From Poland eastwards, the term "Pomeranian Way of St. James" is common. In this documentation, we stick with the cross-border name "Via Baltica", partly due to the shortness of the name, and also because pilgrims to Rome or even Jerusalem can also use it.
