The Michel - the landmark of Hamburg

Although we have already walked many kilometers into the Hamburg metropolitan area, the fact that Hamburg's airport is located in Fuhlsbüttel suggests that we have not yet really reached the center of Hamburg. That is what lies ahead for us today. We will continue on the "Alster hiking trail" and then pass through the green recreational area Aussenalster and the upscale business district to reach the historic old town. The route really lives up to the reputation of a city guide, as on the way to the stage destination Hamburg Altona, we pass the most important sights of Hamburg, including the main church of Saint Michael, respectfully referred to by locals simply as "Michel."

The pilgrimage route along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea goes by various names, for example in Germany also "Baltic-Westphalian Way of St. James." Eastward from Poland, the name "Pomeranian Way of St. James" is common. In this documentation we stick to the cross-border name "Via Baltica," partly because of its brevity, and also because pilgrims to Rome or even to Jerusalem can use it as well.
