Hamburg: Harbor City

Hamburg: Harbor City

Today's stage is once again one of those where you don't need any navigation aids, neither maps nor compass nor GPS. As long as you see the Elbe on the left and the sun is somewhere above the Elbe, you are on the right axis, even if maybe not exactly on the suggested route. The list of places gives the impression that one is walking through very densely populated areas, partly also with larger towns. But this impression is deceptive, because the Elbe on the left conveys a sense of endless vastness, and the towns on the right can only be guessed at. If you want to get provisions, you will mostly have to branch off from the riverbank path inland.

We walk almost the entire stage still on Hamburg soil, only shortly before the stage destination do we come back to Schleswig-Holstein. The stage ends shortly after the inn "Schulauer Fährhaus" with the ship greeting facility. A few steps further and we are at the ferry dock for the crossing to Lühe on the other side of the Elbe, where our next stage will begin. Now is the moment where we should at the latest familiarize ourselves with the ferry timetable and accommodation options in Wedel.

Note(s)

The pilgrim path along the south coast of the Baltic Sea has various names, in Germany for example also "Baltic-Westphalian Way of St. James." From Poland eastwards the designation "Pomeranian Way of St. James" is common. In this documentation we stick to the cross-border name "Via Baltica," partly because of the shortness of the name, and also because pilgrims to Rome or even Jerusalem can also use it.
