uy-En-Velay: Cathedral Notre Dame du Puy

Until Le Puy-En-Velay, we remain in the Dept. Haute Loire (43) of the Auvergne region. The terrain slopes gently on this section, but still we have a series of short ascents to overcome. At Polignac, we join the GR3 again, which we left at Les Granges. This is the last stage on the Burgundian Way; we arrive at Le-Puy-En-Velay, one of the most important gathering places for pilgrims in France.

Le Puy-En-Velay with its cathedral located on a volcanic hill was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1908. Also worth visiting is the Chapelle Saint-Michel-d'Aiguilhe, perched on a volcanic needle. This place deserves a rest and visit day.

Anmerkungen

From the tri-border area D/CH/F, the Burgundian Way northwest of the Jura arc is the classic route to Le-Puy-En-Velay. Compared to the more direct paths through Switzerland, it is flatter but also longer.
