Spanish Gate in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Saint-Jean: relax, the Pyrenees lie ahead
However, the pilgrim hostel in the Santa Maria de Roncesvalles monastery complex has enough sleeping spaces even during peak months. Those who complete this stage without problems are well prepared. Shortly before the end of the stage, at the Col de Leopeder, the Luis Roldán Monument variant leads us to the monument of a controversial politician.
Those who can take a more relaxed approach to this path's beginning can also choose this variant and split the first stage. This variant is also recommended in winter.

The Camino Francés begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the French foot of the Pyrenees and ends in Santiago de Compostela. It is the busiest section of all the Camino routes, as most pilgrims eventually come to Santiago along this axis.
It is worth starting this stage early in order to eat, drink, and rest along the way. Since this path can be difficult or even impassable not only in winter, we offer a variant more or less along the N135 over the Puerto de Ibañeta.
