To the next section St. Gallen - Altstätten

The stage leads us in a south-southwest direction, away from major traffic flows, through rolling terrain, the first 14 kilometers to Wittenbach. In this section, we leave the canton of Thurgau and enter the canton of St. Gallen. Conversations with locals are relatively easy for pilgrims from eastern Switzerland and southern Germany but can be somewhat challenging for more northern pilgrims, as the dialects in this area are quite distinctive.

From Wittenbach, the pre-Alps become noticeable, as we climb steeply about 200 meters in elevation to the pass at Heiden, the first residential neighborhood on the outskirts of the stage destination St. Gallen. The stage ends in St. Gallen in the abbey district, specifically in the monastery courtyard. Here we find a large collection of valuable cultural treasures, such as the baroque cathedral from the 18th century with the famous abbey library.

Anmerkungen

For simplicity, we will now call this pilgrimage route the «Via Francisca». It runs from Konstanz via the Lukmanier Pass to Pavia, where it meets the Via Francigena.
