From Wittenbach, the pre-Alps become noticeable, as we climb steeply about 200 meters in elevation to the pass at Heiden, the first residential neighborhood on the outskirts of the stage destination St. Gallen. The stage ends in St. Gallen in the abbey district, specifically in the monastery courtyard. Here we find a large collection of valuable cultural treasures, such as the baroque cathedral from the 18th century with the famous abbey library.
For simplicity, we will now call this pilgrimage route the «Via Francisca». It runs from Konstanz via the Lukmanier Pass to Pavia, where it meets the Via Francigena.
The stages suggested in this documentation are proposals that each pilgrim can adjust to their wishes. However, the technical data always assume that these stages are completed in one day each.
