Further hiking takes us continuously southwards until we reach Montreux after 2 hours, a place worth seeing. Also advisable to spend a night, except in June, when the international «Montreux Jazz Festival» makes rooms and beds become a limited resource.
Close after Montreux, we reach the well maintained Chillon Castle dating back to the 11th century, one of the most beautiful fortresses of the middle ages in Switzerland. It served as official residence to the Earls of Savoyen, until troups from Berne conquered this region. The remaining part of our trail will remain very flat until we approach Aigle. There we start to mount up through the vintner village «Yvorne» and the vineyards in order to enjoy the view from up here over the Rhône Valley and Aigle on the alps. Todays stage will end in the center of Aigle close to the town hall.
Note(s)
The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the stretch from Pontarlier close to the F/CH border across Lausanne to Rome.
