Romans already appreciated the strategicly well positioned place of Montefiascone, and later on also popes residing in Rome did so, because those heads of the Christian Church did not always have an easy life, They sometimes even had to escape from «dangerous» Rome. As a consequence, the forteress «Rocca dei Papi» was the last domicile of the pope at the time before leaving to his exile in Avignon, and the first one when returning from there. Construction of the Montefiascone cathedral with its impressive dome began in 1519 and was terminated during the 17th century.
