In the Tuskany region, there exists a second «San Miniato», the other one is in the Florence district. To differenciate them, our destination is also called San Miniato al Tedesco (the one of «the German»). That's because during the Middle Ages, our destination hosted the administration for central Italy of the Roman-German Empire.
San Miniato is split between San Miniato Basso and San Miniato (Alto), the part of the community on the hill. This little town has a cathedral worth to be explored ,dating back to the 13th century, a cathedral which has been reworked several times thereafter. The belltower beside makes use of a former fortified tower, whose name is Torre di Matilde.
