Today's trip is exclusively in the Viterbo province within the Lazio region. and takes us along flat or partly descending trails to the «Lago di Bolsena», some 90 km north of Rome, with an almost round shape, 114 square km of surface and 150 meters of depth. The lake is a result of volcanic activities, but as an exception, it's not a lake in a volcanic crater, but the result of subterrestrial caves which callapsed some 300'00 years ago once the lava they transported found a way to the surface somewhere else. Today , the lake is a popular vacation resort.

San Lorenzo Nuovo is the only major village we encounter on our way today. Its name reflects that during the 18th century, inhabitants of the former San Lorenzo Vecchio had been resettled here. Probably, the great view we have from this new place on the lake had not been the key reason for this transfer.

Our destination Bolsena is located on the north-eastern beach of the lake. This place has a rich history including resettlements at roman times. Wonders, catacombs and the roman cathedral Santa Christina in which one of these wonders had happened resulting later on in the introduction of the holiday «Corpus Christi» by the Pope Urban IV. This impressive list will give you some ideas for local personal research on these topics.
