it´s a long way ... to go

We are staying in the province of Pavia with flat territory and are getting closer to the Po, the largest river in northern Italy. There are still rice fields, but more and more, we also find maize plantations and plantations of cereal other than rice which can grow with less water.

Close to San Giacomo, we should visit the church «Oratorio San Giacomo», a little beauty dating back to 12th to 15th century. At that time, a hospice nearby was also available. At the boundary of Belgioioso, we will encounter a rice treatment facility named «Riso Principe», we may have a chance to have a look into that facility. Our destination Santa Cristina was well known in the early Middle Age because of its Abbey owned and used by Benedictines.

The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
