The only thing which does not change today is that we keep on hiking in the province of Parma; province of the Emilia-Romagna region. The key change of today is us getting back to hills in the South of the Po plane. The other change is that we now will seriously start moving to the South, where we will reach Rome at the end of our adventure.

Todays section is relatively long, but we will find opportunities to spend the night before Fornovo if needed, maybe we ask natives for advice. During the second part of this day, we will come into the valley of the River Taro which is flowing northwards. Following the river to the South, we will pass through the «Parco Fluviale Regionale Del Taro» before we reach the bridge crossing the broad bed of the Taro river towards Fornovo. This bridge is an important road connection between East and West, and Fornovo at the east end of the bridge therefore is a well suited place to spend the night.

The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 main christian pilgrimage trails of the Middle Ages, the main axis leading from Canterbury to Rome. This documentation currently covers the most frequented section from Lausanne to Rome.
